Evgeny Anatolevich Romanov


Evgeniy Anatolevich Romanov, born 2 November 1988, Kaliningrad, Russia

Russian chess player, grandmaster (2007).

Biography
A FIDE master since 1998, after finishing school as a straight A student, Evgeniy gained his law degree from the Immanuel Kant Russian State University. His mentors included Vladimir Yurkov, Yuri Balashov, Josef Dorfman and Vitaliy Tseshkovskiy.

In 1998, he won the Under 10 section of both the Russian and World Championship, which was held in Oropesa-del-Mar, Spain. He also came first in the European Youth Championships, winning the U12 section in Halkidiki in 2000, and the U14’s in Peniscola in 2002.

In 2005 Evgeniy gained the title of International Master, and two years later in 2007, he became a Grandmaster.

In the Russian individual and team championship for students held in Belgorod in 2008, Evgeniy won the individual section.

His results in international competitions include:

  • Euro-Orient Masters, Nice (2008) – 1st
  • Liepaja Castling Rapid Tournament (2008, 2015) – 1st
  • XXXIII Tenkes Kupa, Harkan (2009) – 1st
  • Intellectual Games Festival, Cannes (2012) – 1st
  • LGA Cup, Nuremberg (2012, 2013) – 1st
  • 4T Torneig Obert ITT Jahv McGregor a Bogota, Colombia – 1st
  • Sunway Sitges Festival – 1st
  • He was also awarded the title of best player in the Deutsche Schach Bundesliga for the 2012/2013 season.
  • Winner of different stages of the men’s section of the Russian Cup between 2012 and 2016.
  • Bronze medalist in the men’s European Championship (Legnica, 2013)
  • Participant in the men’s World Cup (Khanti-Mansisk 2011 and Tromso 2013).

Clubs he has played for in competitions include Debut-DBGTU (Vlasdivostok), South Ural (Chelyabinsk), and the Chigorin Club (St Petersburg). Abroad, Evgeniy has represented Erfurter Schachklub and Sportfreunde Katernberg 1913 E.V. (Germany), as well as the Norwegian teams Kristiansund Sjakklubb and Vaalerenga Sjakklubb, champion of Norway in 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and also SK AD Jiclin of the Czech Republic.

Evgeniy trained the Norwegian men’s team at the Tromso Olympiad in 2014, and the German men’s team at the Baku Olympiad in 2016.

He was a bronze medalist at the Batumi Olympiad in 2018, and a silver medalist in the team section of the 2019 European Championships, as coach of the Georgian national team.

He is currently coach of the Turkish men’s team.
